Dr. John Fotheringham joined the team of physicians at the Atikokan Medical associates clinic in 2007. Although he was born in Atikokan, he has never actually lived here. However, he is quickly discovering that people know him – even if he doesn’t always know them. That would probably have something to do with the fact that his grandmother Myrtle Leishman’s family were among the town’s early pioneers, and much of his immediate family has found their way back to Atikokan over the years.
“We moved so much when I was younger. It was odd that we all ended up in one place,” said Fotheringham.
While growing up, his family moved around Northwestern Ontario, and lived briefly in Toronto, NWT and Newfoundland, with his father Bill’s job as a mining engineer.
He attended Queen’s University’s medical school, and completed his family residency at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in Thunder Bay, graduating in 2007. Prior to studying medicine, Fotheringham spent several years in Boston, Mass., as a mental health counsellor.
He enjoys canoeing, fishing, reading, computers and spending time at his parents’ camp on Clearwater Lake. “People have been really welcoming and friendly. It speaks well for the town.”
