Atikokan Health and Community Services is committed to accommodating the needs of our patients, clients, residents, visitors and staff members through accessible care and an environment of inclusivity.

We understand that delivering the highest quality of care possible is incumbent on ensuring our policies and procedures are consistent with principles of dignity, independence, integration, and equality. We believe in integrating the provision of services to persons with disabilities whenever possible, or exploring alternate measures when necessary, and giving equal opportunities to people with disabilities. 

AHCS is continually working to make all of our spaces more accessible to create a barrier-free and fully accessible facility. Our multi-year Accessibility Planning has helped us identify, remove and prevent barriers to individuals with disabilities who live, work in or use our hospital and community sites, including clients and their family members, staff members, health care practitioners, volunteers, residents of and visitors to our community.

We operate in compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), with regular monitoring and review of standards. 

AHCS has made significant physical renovations to widen corridors, doorways and other passageways to accommodate assistive devices; improve wayfinding and signage for all abilities; upgraded lighting and visibility; upgraded spaces and restrooms for both public and private use; addition of ergonomic and accessible furnishings, and automated entryways; as well as handrails.

Translation Services

Through professional interpreting services in real time, we ensure patients are informed, given comprehensive assessments and obtain accurate and detailed history so that we can provide optimal care. Our goal is that every client, patient, resident and family member can make important decisions with informed consent, regardless of any barriers we may face in communication.

Service Animals

Service animals are allowed in all accessible areas with exceptions and accommodations made when their presence may compromise the health of other patients, clients or residents. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure care and control of their service animal.

Assistive Equipment

All individuals may use their own or access our assistive equipment while in our buildings. Available equipment includes wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, telephones with volume control and hearing devices.
