Care That Feels Like Home

The decision to move into long-term care is a big one, both for individuals and for the people who love them.

At Atikokan Health and Community Services, we work hard to make that decision feel a little easier by offering not just professional care, but comfort, connection, and community.

Our Extended Care Wing is a 26-bed long-term care home located within the AHCS site. It’s a warm, welcoming environment where residents receive around-the-clock support from a compassionate team — including physicians, nurses, personal support workers, dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, kinesiologists, and recreation staff.

But long-term care is more than medical support; it’s a place where life continues to be meaningful and full of moments worth sharing. Residents enjoy daily meals in a common dining space, a wide range of recreational programming, and access to services like rehabilitation, seniors counselling, pastoral care, and palliative care visitation.

From BINGO and baking to gardening, social outings, musical entertainment, and even pet visits, activities are shaped by resident interests and supported by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers. Our Smile App also helps families stay connected, offering real-time glimpses into the moments their loved ones are enjoying at home.

If you're considering long-term care for yourself or a loved one, we're here to answer your questions and help you explore whether our Extended Care Wing is the right fit.

Because no matter what stage of life you’re in, everyone deserves to feel safe, supported, and seen.

    Comfortable, Personalized Living Spaces

The Extended Care Wing offers 26 long-term care beds in a mix of private and semi-private rooms designed to balance comfort, accessibility, and privacy.

Thirteen of our rooms are modern private suites, newly built in 2017, while the remaining rooms built in 1986 offer a blend of private and semi-private layouts. All rooms are wheelchair accessible, include their own washroom, and are designed to feel open and bright with large windows for plenty of natural light. Each room is also air-conditioned for added comfort.

Residents are encouraged to make their space their own by adding personal touches like family photos, favourite plants, or small furnishings. Standard amenities in every room include a bed, bedside table, closet or dresser, and basic cable service.

If a resident would like to watch TV, they are welcome to bring their own television and wall mount. Telephone access is also available — residents simply need to bring their own phone and coordinate setup and billing with their chosen provider.

  • Dining Room

A Warm Space for Shared Meals and Special Moments

The Extended Care Wing features a bright, welcoming dining room where residents gather to enjoy daily meals, celebrations, and time together.

The space includes a fully equipped kitchen—with a fridge, stove, microwave, and sink—that residents can use with assistance from staff. It’s also where many recreational and social activities take place, from baking sessions and themed dinners to holiday celebrations and special events hosted by our Recreation Team.

While the main hospital cafeteria is not formally open to the public, family and friends are welcome to share a meal with their loved one in the dining room. Meal tickets can be purchased at the main office Monday to Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

  • Outdoor Gazebo & Walking Path

The Extended Care Wing has a large fenced in outdoor area with a walking path, gardens, seating area and gazebo.  Residents are families are welcome to use this area from May to October.
